When might you need a child and adolescent psychologist?
Parents often wonder what makes a visit to a psychologist necessary. They have doubts as to whether their children’s problems are serious enough to warrant it. This leads to procrastination and hesitation, whilst the problem grows worse. We must not ignore even the slightest signs when we notice that something is wrong with our child. Any deviations from the norm and changes in a child’s behaviour, as well as signs that may indicate certain difficulties, must raise concerns.
Very often, we will not be able to cope on our own with the problems troubling our child. If we provide them with support, care and love, along with a great deal of understanding and empathy, and their condition does not improve, the next step must be to consult a child and adolescent psychologist.
When should you take your child to see a psychologist?
It is important to be aware that even an infant may need to see a psychologist. This is a very important period during which it is possible to spot any unusual behaviour in the child. An infant should be taken to see a psychologist in situations where:
- he is irritable,
- his muscle tone is reduced or increased,
- has trouble sleeping,
- has been withdrawn,
- cannot concentrate on a single activity or object,
- is hypersensitive to various stimuli – auditory, visual, gustatory or kinesthetic,
- shows too little sensitivity to stimuli,
- is acting restlessly.
Psychological support is needed by pre-school children, as well as school-age children and teenagers going through the challenging period of adolescence. Symptoms that should cause parents concern include, amongst others:
- sleep disorders,
- emotional problems – including, amongst other things, excessive aggression or tearfulness,
- difficulty in making friends with peers,
- a lack of interest in peers,
- excessive shyness and withdrawal,
- eating disorders,
- anxiety disorders and phobias,
- difficulties with learning and concentration,
- autoaggressive behaviour.
If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, please contact a child and adolescent psychologist at the Dialog Therapy Centre to seek help from an experienced specialist.
