Child and adolescent psychiatrist
The role of a child psychiatrist is to treat a wide range of mental disorders and illnesses in children. A child psychiatrist treats, amongst other things, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and developmental disorders in children on the autism spectrum. What symptoms might suggest that parents should take their child to see a psychiatrist?
What behaviours in a child would suggest it is worth seeing a psychiatrist?
An increasing number of parents are concerned about their children’s mental health, which gives rise to a host of doubts. A pre-schooler may be a very energetic child, yet at the same time struggle to get on with their peers. The situation may be such that the child plays on their own, without interacting with the others, or, conversely, the child may be extremely aggressive and hyperactive.
A pupil at primary school level may also find it difficult to sit still in one place for 45 minutes. It is not uncommon for parents to be inundated with phone calls and other messages from the school for this very reason. For parents of teenagers, however, a major cause for concern may be the fact that their child is taking various psychoactive substances. It can also be a cause for concern if the child very often gets into arguments or even displays aggression.
When parents are faced with the problems mentioned above, they often ask themselves: are these issues actually linked to their child’s current stage of growing up, or might there be something entirely different behind them? Parents may find it difficult to determine unequivocally whether their child’s behaviour stems from mistakes made in their upbringing, or whether the problem lies in a completely different area. If, in any case, any doubts arise, the best course of action is to consult a specialist – a child and adolescent psychiatrist – who will be able to provide comprehensive support.
