Observing a child at nursery or school: let’s get to know their world within a peer group

Feedback from teachers

Your form tutors draw your attention to behaviour that you don’t see at home.

Adjustment difficulties

The child is finding it difficult to settle into a new group, at nursery or in class.

Relationships with peers

Tensions, withdrawal or conflicts arise in interactions with children.

As a self-service facility

This is a good option when your child is still too young for a full clinical assessment, but you’ve noticed some worrying signs or received comments from their teachers.

What do you get out of it?

An honest assessment from a psychologist and clear guidance on how to support your little one’s development at an early stage — without delay.

To complement the diagnostic process

If your child is already undergoing assessment at our Centre (e.g. for autism spectrum disorder, ADHD or emotional difficulties), this observation provides an invaluable addition to the whole process.

What do you get out of it?

A psychologist observes behaviours that cannot be seen in the consulting room — which ensures that the diagnosis is as accurate as possible.

1

A visit to the psychologist

about 2 hours

A specialist visits the group or class and discreetly observes the child whilst they are playing freely, interacting with their peers and taking part in structured activities.

2

A discussion with teachers

Conversation

The psychologist talks to form tutors and teachers who know the child on a day-to-day basis — piecing together the details to form a complete picture.

3

Analysis and conclusions

Analysis

An in-depth analysis of behaviour, identifying strengths and areas requiring support.

4

Opinion with recommendations

Opinion

You will receive a detailed written report, together with specific guidance on working at home and at the centre.

A true picture of a child

We see the child in their natural environment, free from stress and the ‘white coat effect’ associated with a visit to the doctor’s surgery. This allows us to see how they really function on a day-to-day basis.

Consistent cooperation with the institution

We bring together the perspectives of parents, teachers and a psychologist. You’re all working towards the same goal — for the benefit of the child and with respect for the staff at the school.

A concrete action plan

You won’t be left with just the theory — you’ll receive clear, step-by-step guidance on what to do next, both at home and at your childcare centre.

Sensory overload – symptoms, causes and ways of coping

Sensory overload is a condition in which the nervous system receives more stimuli than it is able to process effectively. It can affect anyone, but is particularly common amongst highly sensitive people, those with neurodiversity, and those living under chronic stress. It manifests itself both physically and mentally, affecting day-to-day functioning, relationships and well-being. In […]

No. The whole process is completely discreet. The psychologist blends into the environment as a ‘guest’ or ‘helper’ to the mother, rather than as someone who is assessing the child. This allows the child to behave naturally, whilst we observe their genuine, everyday behaviour — without any tension or the feeling of being judged.
There’s no need to worry about this — we’ll help you sort out the paperwork. We’ll advise you on how to speak to the management and, if necessary, provide a template consent form for the nursery or school. Visits always take place in consultation with the nursery or school and in collaboration with the staff who look after your child on a day-to-day basis.
Following the assessment, the psychologist needs time to thoroughly analyse the information gathered and prepare a detailed report with recommendations. We agree on the exact date on a case-by-case basis when booking the appointment — we want to ensure that the report is specific and genuinely useful in your day-to-day work with the child.
No. Our aim is not to replace teachers or the school counsellor, but to support their work by providing an additional outside perspective. We combine the perspectives of home and school so that all the adults around the child can work consistently and towards the same goal.
Observation works well for both pre-schoolers and school-age children. It is particularly valuable when a child is still too young for a full clinical assessment, and you want to understand their needs at an early stage. If you’re unsure whether now is the right time, we’d be happy to advise you over the phone.
