Myofunctional therapy
What is myofunctional therapy?
Myofunctional therapy is a form of treatment focused on improving the function of the facial muscles, the mouth and the tongue. It involves carefully selected exercises and techniques designed to support correct muscle tone and coordination of these structures.
It is frequently used in speech and language therapy, particularly when working on correct swallowing, breathing and tongue positioning. It plays an important role in supporting speech development and in the treatment of speech disorders resulting from abnormal muscle function.

Get effective help at the Dialog Therapy Centre
Myofunctional therapy is a process based on regular sessions with a specialist and independent work at home. Consistency and cooperation are key to helping you establish new habits.
This is a holistic approach that takes into account the various functions within the mouth and face. Although it requires time and commitment, it yields lasting results in the form of improvements in functions such as breathing, swallowing and articulation.
Who is myofunctional therapy for?
Myofunctional therapy is intended for children who have difficulties with speech development or abnormalities in the functioning of the muscles within the oral cavity.
It is particularly recommended for mouth breathing, abnormal swallowing, reduced muscle tone in the face and tongue, and for malocclusion and abnormal tongue positioning.
It can also provide support during orthodontic treatment, helping to reinforce correct habits and support the results of the treatment.
What does it help with?
- correcting bad habits, such as breathing through the mouth or swallowing incorrectly
- improving speech quality by enhancing the function and coordination of the articulatory muscles
- supporting the correct development of the bite and the results of orthodontic treatment
- improving the function of the facial muscles and the tongue
- promoting better posture
What results does it produce:
- better articulation and clarity of speech.
- a reduction in problems associated with mouth breathing and improved sleep quality.
- improvements in bite alignment and tooth position, which may reduce the need for orthodontic treatment.
- an overall improvement in oral health.
The Pick & Up Scheme
We’ll bring your child to and from nursery.
The carer takes them to their therapy session and brings them back, all within the nursery’s opening hours. This
means the therapy fits into a day that’s already planned,
so you don’t have to take time off work or organise your afternoon around travel arrangements.
