Myofunctional therapy

Myofunctional therapy is a form of treatment focused on improving the function of the facial muscles, the mouth and the tongue. It involves carefully selected exercises and techniques designed to support correct muscle tone and coordination of these structures.

It is frequently used in speech and language therapy, particularly when working on correct swallowing, breathing and tongue positioning. It plays an important role in supporting speech development and in the treatment of speech disorders resulting from abnormal muscle function.

Agreements

Myofunctional therapy is a process based on regular sessions with a specialist and independent work at home. Consistency and cooperation are key to helping you establish new habits.

This is a holistic approach that takes into account the various functions within the mouth and face. Although it requires time and commitment, it yields lasting results in the form of improvements in functions such as breathing, swallowing and articulation.

Myofunctional therapy is intended for children who have difficulties with speech development or abnormalities in the functioning of the muscles within the oral cavity.

It is particularly recommended for mouth breathing, abnormal swallowing, reduced muscle tone in the face and tongue, and for malocclusion and abnormal tongue positioning.

It can also provide support during orthodontic treatment, helping to reinforce correct habits and support the results of the treatment.

  • correcting bad habits, such as breathing through the mouth or swallowing incorrectly
  • improving speech quality by enhancing the function and coordination of the articulatory muscles
  • supporting the correct development of the bite and the results of orthodontic treatment
  • improving the function of the facial muscles and the tongue
  • promoting better posture

  • better articulation and clarity of speech.
  • a reduction in problems associated with mouth breathing and improved sleep quality.
  • improvements in bite alignment and tooth position, which may reduce the need for orthodontic treatment.
  • an overall improvement in oral health.

We understand that discussions about a child’s speech development and communication difficulties require attentiveness, a calm approach and a great deal of sensitivity.

That is why, at the Dialog Centre for Children and Families, consultations are conducted by experienced speech and language therapists and neuro-speech therapists who work with children and young people. Our specialists possess the relevant qualifications and clinical experience, and join the team following a multi-stage recruitment process.
